Vintage Thingys Thursday and Contest Winners

Hey Folks!  It's Thursday already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In one week I'll be an antique!  heehee  Thanks for all the advance Birthday wishes.

By the way, what makes something vintage?  I know with cars those have to be at least 25 years old.  What about all our thingys?  Is 25 years old the minimum?   Wow, if that's the case my Yearbooks have been vintage for at least 7 years.  And my son will be vintage next month.

This shelf  hangs in our narrow little kitchen.  It has lots of vintage thingys on it. On that top shelf is a Barbie thermos just like the one I had way back when.  The Esslinger Premium Beer platter is one of many that Bill has picked up as we wander through junky antique stores.  (We don't even bother with the high falootin' stores!)  The coffee pot is one I smuggled out of my great grandparents house ages ago.  It works too.  Don't worry - no one was living there so no one missed it ;)
The second shelf holds a few of  wooden blocks from my little girlhood.  Can't see 'em all but there's a "J" for Jordan, a "K" for Katharine, one with a chicken and one with a TV on it.
The platter is from a full set of china that Bill and I bought about the time we got married 3 years ago.  It screams Atomic!!!!  It's Cathay by Taylor Stone Taylor.  We picked up full service - dinner plates, bread/dessert plates, coffee cups, saucers - for 8, PLUS the platter and a big serving bowl AND a sugar bowl w/lid and a creamer.  Guess how much?    $22!!!!!!!!!!  Ah-mazing!
The picture (which I need to scan so you can see it better) is one of me, my [Grand]Mama, my Mom and Mama's Mother.  4 generations of Campbell - Walker women!  The mat in the frame is a scrap of the first wallpaper in our home's kitchen.  It's Woodmont by Waverly.
Mom and Dad moved in 50 years ago last August.  Mom is still there!  Pack-rat that she is, she had a roll and part of a roll of that wallpaper left which she kindly gave to me.  I cried when she changed it in the 70's.
Last on that shelf is an old fashioned knuckle buster grater.  I think that's my newer one rather than my vintage one.
That's a lot in one pic huh?
Two quick announcements!
1. The Random Generator chose # 3 and # 4 as winners of  the UPrinting.com  business card give away.
Congrats to Michelle of  Pink Dragonfly & Ronit of Two Hippos
2. Will and Jennifer called late this afternoon.  Our Grandbaby, due in Jaunary............

(Just in case you wondered, Will is Bills' oldest child.  Bill also has a daughter, Megan.  My oldest is Jordan and Katharine is the baby.  Oddly enough their actual birth order is Will, Megan, Jordan, Kat!)
For more fun Vintage Thingys scoot over to ColoradoLady Suzanne's blog to find more linkys.
It's just after midnight and I can't decide if I'm going to start a new project now or go to bed........................

Progress and MORE Give Aways!!!!!!!!

Our Labor Day wound down last night as the last ACC football game (til Thursday) was playing on ESPN in the background. It was a good weekend. Lazy and music filled.  Hope yours was too!

Have I mentioned that I have a Futie? That's a Singer Futura. It's an okay sewing machine. My friend, Terry The Decorator, for whom I sew, and I went halfsies on it so we could monogram pillows for her customers and friends, etc. I leave it in embroidery mode and do my regular sewing on my much older and sturdier machines. Anyway, I do like to add designs to "stuff."

I'm (very) slowly making progress on Jordan's shirt. Took me days to get the design I wanted to machine embroider downloaded and in the proper format. Partly User Error and partly I think the Futie is overly complex. Too many steps to get from A to B.

But I managed to get the yokes of his western shirt embroidered last night.

The band's logo includes a Bomber plane. Jordan and Rajesh (friends since 6th grade and original band members) decided on a Bomber for no apparent reason. But hey it's rock'n'roll, right?

I've been hand sewing too. How's about this cute little box/bag? The design is from Mai at mairuru! She does incredible handwork. She does ALL of her sewing by hand!! Please check out her blog filled with delightful designs, tutorials and stories. Then go to  + + Siesta + +,  her etsy shopIt's delightful!

Here's the bottom.  I went nuts with embroidery!  I think I'll thread some ribbons through the top so that I can close it.

I was gonna make another little Mai inspired bag but it turned into a block for my new niece. Tried a little reverse applique on the "M" for Madison.  Gotta make a few more so she'll have a set.
(Sorry my pictures are so yellow.)

Vintage Thingies Thursday and a Give Away

As I said earlier - I love September for many reasons!

It's National Sewing Month!
It's my Birthday month - I'll be 50!
It's my daughter Katharine's Birthday month - she'll be 22!
It's College Football kick-Off Month! Go Tigers! Go Demon Deacons!
It's cooler!
It's Fall!
It's time for another GiveAway! Check it out!

Now for somethingys Vintage.

I've shown you things from my Mom's Dad's family and home place. So here's a bit from Mom's Mother's history. We all called her "Mama."

This is the Church her family attended. It was a "Circuit Church" meaning one Pastor was assigned to Moss Chapel and at least 2 other congregations. He would have services at each place on a rotating basis. Believe it or not there are still several Methodist Churches on circuits, including Mama's church.

Isn't it sweet?

I remember attending a Christmas service there with my family and Mama and her sisters and all the uncles and cousins who were nearby. Twas COLD!! with one wood stove up front. The Pastor asked for all the children to come forward to sing "Away in a Manger." Mama shoved me out in the aisle. Couldn't hide - wished I could be invisible - didn't know a soul there but family - managed to sing and not die. Mama was so proud! I didn't understand til I had my own children :)

The building and grounds have been updated since I was a little girl. They have heat and air conditioning now! Anyone else remember those fans on a stick that we used way back when? And other modern conveniences have been added too....

His AND Hers! Mama didn't get to see these being added but I am sure she would have had more than a few jokes and "true" stories to tell about such places.

It's Homecoming this week at Moss Chapel. Mom is going and we are wishing we could join her and Mama's one remaining sister and all the cousins. The food is always wonderful!!!!

And there's always a stroll through the cemetery where I learn more about our ancestors.

Have I mentioned we are pack rats? Yeah, I know, I have. Here are the Barbie cloths that Mama helped me sew. She taught me how to sew by hand way before I was allowed to think about even looking at a sewing machine!

Poor Barbie would look like a sad bag lady if I were to dress her in these now.

Thanks for stopping by. I know I was late posting VTT today but just in case you haven't looked yet - go over to our dear hostess, Suzanne's site, Coloradolady, and check out all the other Vintage Thingys!

And don't forget to check out my
Give Away!
