Vintage Thingies Thursday Stuff

I have been on a death defying, dusty lungs-filling, painful to my knees and much needed clean up and rearranging of my sewing area and stuff.

Holy Guacomole! I found stuff that I didn't even know I had lost!

But I as am wrapping up this cathartic and wonderful process I am happy to say that the local 4-H kids are getting a big ol box of fabric and scraps. My area will be neater and my stuff easier to access.

During the course of my adventure I came across a couple of handwoven grass baskets with lids. One had a whole slew of "D" rings and bias tape. The other I dumped on to my sewing table so I could explore the contents.

The little grass baskets were given to me by my dear friend, Maisie Briner. Maisie was a remarkable woman. She married, raised sons, taught school, buried a husband or 2, was an amazing artist and had the most practical and optimistic outlook on life!

Maisie lived to be 100! She could sew like nobody's business. Maisie was always generous in her willingness to teach me something new. And always ready to give me some of her fabric stash.

Just before she turned 100 she had to move from her darling apartment. My friend Mary and I helped her pack up and sort through her lifetime of possessions. (Others helped too on different days.)

As we cleaned out and packed, Maisie would spy an item and say to one of us - "You take that!" I was lucky enough to receive beautiful vintage dresses, wonderful aprons, a pressing arm and the two little grass baskets. She had either purchased the baskets in Hawaii or her brother who lived there had given them to her.

Just look at how practical she was! Look at all the stuff in that little 5 x 5 x 5 box. She kept buttons, tacks, jewelry to repair, odd metal parts and

girdle hitches!!

Well, I don't know what else to call 'em!

Talk about vintage!

Talk about thrifty and practical!

Before Dear Bill took the pictures I stood in amazement at all the stuff. I said aloud to no one in particular (I do that often) "Look, Maisie kept buttons, pieces, parts, girdle hitches and a baby doll shoe!"

I cried a bit missing Maisie.

Music! Music! Music!

I am one super dooper proud Mama!!!

My Boy, Jordan, and his pals started a band in our basement their Senior year at Chapel Hill High. 100 Yorktown has had a few personnel changes and 3 (yes 3!) Final concerts.

The guys have worked so hard on their craft. Now it is beginning to pay off! In addition to their moms, dads, sisters & brothers (collectively known as 50 Yorktown) and their long time friends, 100 Yorktown now has a genuine fan base!

This fan base turned out last Thursday night in Raleigh to set a record for Thursday night attendance at Deep South The Bar. (Thanks for having us. We all had a blast!)

But the best part - the guys won a gig at Raleigh (NC) Downtown Live series!!!!! They are on the same bill as big time recording artist Filter! It's a free show too.

Also making me very proud is the fact that 100 Yorktown is playing Sunday, May 24th at Raleigh's The Pour House for The Eve Carson Memorial Fund. You can hear some great music and support a worthy cause all at once!

In proud honor of the accomplishments of Jordan and 100 Yorktown I have installed a music playing gizmo. It features a new 100 Yorktown song and songs by a few of their musical influencers and some of my favorite local bands. All these bands are from North Carolina! The music player is waaaaayyy down at the bottom of this page and takes a minute to load and then play!

Enjoy!

Hope to see you in Raleigh soon!

Free Apron Giveaway!

Just one week until National Wear your Apron day!!! May 11, 2009 - Their website has more info.

I discovered a new to me fabric store last Friday! Lynne's Fancy Stitches Outlet in Siler City, NC. It's one of those hidden in plain sight gems! (Don't go looking for a website. It's a very low tech operation.) This little store was packed to the ceiling with amazing fabrics! And more trim than I could take in! Her prices are incredible too.

Lynne and the nice lady who works for her whose name has slipped from my brain were so helpful and completely interested in me - the customer!!! We talked as much as I shopped. (I know no strangers!)

All this to say that I am sooo dern happy to have found a LOCAL fabric store. Okay, not local like 5 minutes away but local as in it's in my county and it has no corporate branding. Take a couple of minutes to check out the 3/50 website that's linked over to the left. It's all about spending our money in our community and saving as many of the Mom 'n' Pop stores as possible.

Now for what I found there!

Lynne's Fabric Store,Apron,apron giveaway

Lynne's Fabric Store,Apron,apron giveaway

Check out the super jumbo rickrack!!! As EllynAnne Geisel says, "You can never have too much rickrack!" I bought other fabric - a bunch of purples and purple rickrack! But my camera batteries died. Woo! All of the fabric I bought will become aprons.

And finally - duh duh tah duh!!! My Very First Super Special Apron Giveaway!

Here's how to win:

Leave a message at the end of this post. Tell me something about where you shop for crafty/fabric-y things or about your intense love of aprons or even better-both!

Do this by midnight (your time) on Sunday, May 10th.

On Monday, in honor of National Wear Your Apron Day, I will put all your names in some sort of container* and draw the lucky winner!

The winner will choose from one of the two fabrics shown above that I picked up at Lynne's.

Wheeeee......

Now get to typing, please.

*What sort of container should I use? Susan over at Not Quite June Cleaver uses her infamous Mason Jar. I could use a hat but that seems so not original.

Ideas?
